When to Book Your Newborn Session: The Best Time to Capture Those Tiny Details

Welcoming a new baby into the world is one of the most exciting moments in a family’s life. Those first few weeks fly by in a blur of feeding, cuddles, and sleepless nights. That’s why newborn photography is so important—it freezes those fleeting moments so you can cherish them forever.

As a Louisville, Kentucky newborn photographer, one of the most common questions I get from expecting parents is: “When is the best time to schedule a newborn session?” The answer depends on the type of images you want, but if you're looking for those sleepy, curled-up newborn poses, sooner is always better!

The Ideal Time for a Newborn Session

For those dreamy, curled-up, sleepy poses, the best time to photograph your newborn is between 5 and 14 days after birth. During this window:

✔️ Your baby is still in that sleepy, womb-like state, making it easier to pose them gently.
✔️ They naturally curl up into those adorable, squishy newborn positions.
✔️ They’re less likely to experience baby acne or peeling skin, which can appear after the two-week mark.

By capturing your newborn during this sweet spot, we can create soft, timeless images that showcase their tiniest details—from their little fingers and toes to their delicate eyelashes and button nose.

When Should You Book Your Session?

Because newborns arrive on their own schedule, I recommend booking your newborn session during your second or early third trimester. This guarantees a reserved spot on my calendar, and we’ll schedule the exact date once your baby arrives.

Since I only take a limited number of newborn sessions per month, booking in advance ensures you won’t miss out on capturing these once-in-a-lifetime moments.

What If My Baby is Older Than Two Weeks?

Missed the two-week window? No worries! While the first two weeks are ideal for posed newborn photography, I also love capturing babies up to one month old with more relaxed, lifestyle-style sessions.

  • 2-4 weeks old – Your baby may be more awake, leading to beautiful eye contact and expressions.

  • 1-2 months old – These sessions focus more on baby’s personality, stretching, and bonding moments with parents.

No matter how old your baby is, I promise to capture gorgeous, heartwarming photos that you’ll treasure forever.

Why Booking Early Matters

Newborn photography is about preserving the tiniest details before they change forever. The newborn stage is fleeting, and once it’s gone, you can’t get it back. Booking early means you’ll have peace of mind knowing these moments are secured and beautifully documented.
